Integrating women's history into the curriculum and including multiple perspectives are two steps of the holistic approach that work closely together.

In order to correct the imbalance of gender perspectives in the social studies classroom, middle school teachers should:
  • actively seek materials that represent male and female perspectives.
  • analyze materials already in use to determine if there is a discrepancy or bias in the perspectives depicted.
  • seek to include multiple perspectives on a daily basis.

 .

When evaluating materials to ensure multiple gender perspectives are included teachers should ask three questions:

Does this material favor one perspective over another?

Does this material offer a perspective that has previously been marginalized?

Does this material offer students opportunities to make connections to their own lives?

Including Women's Perspectives

Many social studies textbooks focus on the perspectives and contributions of men.
Here are ways to provide access to female perspectives:
  • historical letters, journal, and books written by women
  • online resources such as the Women's Library
  • women guest speakers who can share their current and historical experiences
